Mill Farm is a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and is within an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA) renowned for its diverse wildlife and natural flora. The estuary is one of the best in the United Kingdom and has gained worldwide recognition and protection as a wetland area called a RAMSAR site. It contains habitats and species which are rare and threatened within a European context.
